Chapter 6 · Recognition

Recognition

How does recognition happen?

Abstract

Three scenes show how recognition happens. At a water pump in Alabama in 1887, Helen Keller connects the word spelled into her hand with the water running over it. In the garden, Adam hears the question “Where are you?” and finds his position. At a desk, a researcher puts a question to a language model and sees in the answer a structure he could not see alone. In each scene the one inside carries the missing, the one outside aims at nothing, and recognition happens where the two meet. The test of the middle act is recognised the same way: from inside, not proved from outside.
